What is a QR Code and How to Use It?

QR (Quick Response) code means quick response code and is a two-dimensional barcode that provides quick access to information by scanning with a smartphone camera. Developed in Japan in 1994, QR codes are widely used today in marketing, payment systems, authentication, and information sharing.

QR Code Use Cases

Website and URL Sharing: You can direct users directly to your website by adding QR codes to business cards, posters, brochures, and advertising materials. Instead of typing long and complex URLs, users instantly access the site by scanning the QR code.

Digital Menus: Restaurants and cafes can offer contactless service using digital menus with QR codes. Customers can access the menu on their phones by scanning the QR code, eliminating the need for physical menus.

Payment Systems: Mobile payment applications and digital wallets provide a fast and secure payment infrastructure with QR codes. Customers can make instant payments by scanning the QR code.

Event and Ticket Management: QR codes are used in digital tickets for concerts, theaters, cinemas, and sports events. Fast and secure entry is provided by scanning the QR code at entry control points.

Social Media and Contact: You can share your Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn profiles or WhatsApp contact information with a QR code. It is ideal for quick information sharing at networking events.

Wi-Fi Access: You can enable guests to quickly connect to the network by sharing your Wi-Fi network information (SSID and password) with a QR code. Scanning the QR code is enough instead of manually typing complex passwords.

How to Scan a QR Code?

Most modern smartphones can scan QR codes with their built-in camera app. On iPhone (iOS 11+) and Android devices (Android 9+), simply open the camera app and point it at the QR code. The phone will automatically detect the QR code and send a notification.

On older devices or phones without a built-in QR reader, you can download free QR code reader apps from the App Store or Google Play. Popular options include "QR Code Reader", "Kaspersky QR Scanner", and "Google Lens".

Error Correction Levels

QR codes use the Reed-Solomon error correction algorithm. This ensures the QR code remains readable even if part of it is damaged or dirty. There are four different error correction levels:

  • L (Low): 7% recovery - Sufficient for clean environments
  • M (Medium): 15% recovery - Recommended for most uses
  • Q (Quartile): 25% recovery - For outdoor use
  • H (High): 30% recovery - For industrial and harsh conditions

A higher error correction level is more secure but increases the size of the QR code and requires more data storage space. "M" (Medium) level is sufficient for most uses.

QR Code Size Selection

QR code size should be selected according to the intended use:

  • 128x128 px: For digital use, websites, emails
  • 256x256 px: For business cards, small posters
  • 512x512 px: For A4 sized prints, medium posters
  • 1024x1024 px: For large posters, billboards, codes to be scanned from a distance

General rule: The QR code should be at least 1/10th of the scanning distance. For example, a QR code to be scanned from 1 meter away should be at least 10 cm.

How to Use?

  1. Enter the URL or text you want to convert to a QR code
  2. Select the QR code size (according to usage)
  3. Set the error correction level (recommended: M - Medium)
  4. Click the "Generate QR Code" button
  5. Check the preview
  6. Download the QR code to your computer via "Download as PNG"
  7. Add the QR code to business cards, posters, websites, or other materials

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a QR code work?

A QR code stores information in the form of small black-and-white squares. A smartphone camera reads this pattern, decodes the text or URL within it, and presents it to the user.

What is error correction level?

The error correction level ensures the QR code is readable even if damaged or dirty. A higher level is more secure but makes the QR code larger. "M" is sufficient for most uses.

Is the QR code free?

Yes, creating and using QR codes is completely free. The QR codes you generate can be used for an unlimited time and scans.

How many characters fit?

Theoretically, a QR code can carry 4,296 alphanumeric characters. However, in practice, 200-300 characters are recommended. More data makes the QR code complex and harder to scan.
